The University of Kentucky football team collected an impressive win on Saturday over Louisville. A player from Southwest Virginia saw some action for the Wildcats.
Big Stone Gap native Sean Murphy spent time at wide receiver in the Wildcats' 40-34 victory over their Bluegrass state rival, but did not a catch a pass.
Murphy has appeared in all three games for the Wildcats, who broke into the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, and has one catch for 16 yards.
Murphy graduated from Powell Valley High School in 2002.
Barcliff's Best
Former George Wythe High School standout Robert Barcliff had a season-high 35 yards on 12 carries Saturday for the Indiana State University football team in the Sycamores' 13-10 loss to Southeast Missouri.
Barcliff also had one kickoff return for 11 yards. In three games, Barcliff has gained 72 yards on 25 carries and scored one touchdown for the winless Sycamores.
Rough day for Eads
It was a rough day for quarterback Matt Eads (Sullivan East) and the Cumberland (Tenn.) University football team on Saturday as the Bulldogs suffered a 63-3 loss to Georgetown (Ky.) College.
Harassed all day by the Georgetown defense, Eads finished 14-of-25 for 120 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Georgetown travels to the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Saturday in a battle of nationally-ranked NAIA teams.

VMI linebacker Patrick McKinney, a former Powell Valley High School standout, had a big performance in the Keydets' 45-17 loss to James Madison on Saturday.
McKinney was in on a team-high 11 tackles, five of which were solo stops.
Meade still perfect
Kicker Hunter Meade continues to be right on target for the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) football team.
Meade, who attended Virginia High, was 2-for-2 on extra points and also connected on a field goal in the Patriots' loss to Mars Hill on Saturday. Meade is 7-for-7 on extra points thus far and has also split the uprights on all three of his field goal attempts.
Woods, Knapp contribute
Bristol natives Chelsie Woods (John Battle) and Mary Knapp (Tennessee High) have made contributions for the 13-1 Carson-Newman College volleyball team.
Woods has recorded 17 kills, eight blocks and seven digs for the Eagles, while Knapp has notched 27 digs this season.
Poole Power
Tennessee High graduate Lindsey Poole had 21 kills over the weekend for the Radford University volleyball team as the Highlanders split matches with St. Francis and Stony Brook.
Greer is Good
Alysha Greer (Lee High) had 16 kills for UNC-Asheville in a win over South Carolina-Upstate on September 1. It was UNC Asheville's first win of the season.
Schedule stuff
nThe High Point University women's basketball team ? which features sophomore forward Ashlee Samuels (George Wythe) and assistant coach Katie O'Dell (Sullivan East) ? will open the season on Nov. 10 at home against King College.
The Panthers will also play Emory & Henry College in an exhibition game on Nov. 4 and have road games at Virginia Tech (Nov. 11) and Oklahoma State (Nov. 14).
nFreshman Brooke Shepherd will come close to home this season for the University of Alabama-Birmingham women's basketball team.
UAB plays at Virginia Tech on December 2 at 2 p.m. The Blazers also have games at Vanderbilt (Nov. 9), Illinois (Nov. 14) and Auburn (Nov. 17). Later, they will play in a tournament in Hawaii.</span>
